Journey III

 Nebraska Road Tripping

Drop down into Indian Caves. Case of rolling rocks from the liquor store in Falls City. Stop by the dive bar and play blacktop by Colter Wall on the jukebox. Blonde lady slightly aged on the corner of the bar that goes outside to smoke a cigarette. Someone from Texas reunited with their Mom. A young guy with a mullet plays pool.

Falls city

Drink a whiskey at the Hive. Bartender is smoking hott so drink another whiskey. Bartender is even hotter now and have another whiskey. Bar is closed. Drive out to the Platte river and buy a porn magazine. Sleep on a bridge. Wake up and jump on the back of a horse bareback. Get off and jump on the back of another horse bareback and it bucks me off. Don’t jump on the bareback of the pony, that would be too far.

Lied Platte River Trail

Walking up and down hiking trails and bike trails and horse trails trying to explain to my friend the ins and outs of my confusion with a girl I am trying to pursue. This turns out to be one of our last conversations.

Platte River State Park

Group of homies that I work with every day. Show up to work on a new project. Work alone through the day and the night. Some guys at work I can be transparent with my words and others are straight laced enough to only be able to answer the question, “How are you?”

Mahoney State Park

Rolling in my inflatable kayak down the Platte River with a bottle of Jack Daniels. Jump out the river and stow away my kayak in the woods. Find some live music. Walk up the highway 66 in the dark back to my car. Drive car 5 miles to pick up my kayak I had stowed away in the woods.

Louisville State Recreation area

Hide my bicycle in a cluster of trees and hike over the pedestrian bridge that goes over the Platte River. Camp on the backside of a hill at Platte river state park. Read Blue Like Jazz, a Christian book for hipsters.

Schramm Park State Rec area

Six pack of tall boys cracked open, music on, windows down, car parked, just stare off at the lake for hours.

Memphis state rec area

Standing at the buoy with a bottomless seltzer in my hand. Drunk adults, excited teenagers and happy children wail, and splash and scream. The sun is going down and I am getting to the bottom of this bottomless seltzer.

Branched Oak State Rec Area

Head out to the river pretty damn blitzed and damn near blacked out. Girls from work and one of their boyfriends. The pictures taken from the trip help me remember the themes. One being that one of the girls looked like Billie Eilish and the other is the idea of big dick energy. These ideas were driving me out of my mind with hilarity. Wanting to see how it would feel to surrender to a power greater than oneself I searched out the current in the river and let myself get dragged down over my head. The suction of the current was not letting me up when I was over the initial impulse of a suicide and I remembered that this was a commitment to the will of the current that I had agreed to and it let me back up  to have another chance at life.

Two Rivers State park

Sunset going down with my ex-girlfriend in a Sublime swimsuit I had bought her from Forever 21. Take some pictures of her on the beach with a swimsuit that matched the outline of the sunset.

Fremont Lakes State Rec area

Take my cousins and their mom out to explore.

Fort Atkinson state historical park

Canoe down the Niobrara with my mother and her dog. Pretty sick waterfall.

Smith Falls State park

Camp with my mother and her dog at Chadron national forest. An unkindness or rather, a conspiracy of ravens fills the sky at dusk.

Chadron state park

Memorial Day weekend I leave a girls house when she gets sick. Go to Lake Mac. Been here before with a pal, another time with my mother, another time with another pal. Now here by myself, after leaving the sick girl, on Memorial Day weekend.

Ogallala.

Joke II

Big sheets full of carbonated water

Lizards out on the deck

Let me tell you about it

There was this dude and he would ride

From town to town

Each town he went to he killed

All of the passenger pigeons

He went to each town until there

Were no passenger pigeons left

And a young girl asked him why he

Did this and he told her it was

Because it put a twinkle in his eye

The girl told him, “I bet you can’t kill

Every Carolina parakeet.” The dude asked

The girl why she would challenge him

So and the girl replied, “It puts a wart

On my gourd.”

Stoned and all alone

Somewhere in rural Kentucky

Spring of 1995

Crawdads, bullfrogs, deer, horses, trees,

Gravel roads, ponds, hills, stars at night

Pioneers landed

Fought Indians

Ate nuts, berries, leather, each other
